The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive is the first production model from BMW’s Neue Klasse generation. It brings a new 800-volt electrical architecture, dramatically faster charging, a redesigned digital experience and one of the strongest range claims currently announced for a luxury electric SUV.

Across the aisle, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric focuses heavily on performance, comfort, cabin technology and everyday versatility. It is quicker than the BMW, has substantially more torque, can tow more, and offers Mercedes’ latest MBUX technology along with an available Hyperscreen.

So which one looks like the better electric SUV?

Based on the specifications and U.S. information available today, the BMW iX3 has the stronger overall case for buyers who prioritize range, fast charging and known pricing. The Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric looks more compelling for buyers who value stronger performance, towing capability and a more luxury-focused cabin experience.

There is one important catch: Mercedes-Benz has not yet published the GLC Electric’s U.S. starting price or EPA range. Until those numbers arrive, any final value verdict has to remain open.

How DriveNyra Compared These EVs

This is a research-based comparison, not a personal road test.

DriveNyra compared the latest U.S. specifications published by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, along with official manufacturer information covering charging, batteries, dimensions, performance, technology and equipment.

Where European figures are discussed, they are identified separately. In particular, WLTP range figures are not presented as though they are equivalent to U.S. EPA estimates.

Specifications can also change before or during a model-year launch, so this comparison will be updated as Mercedes-Benz releases its remaining U.S. information.

One caution with the table: BMW quotes total battery capacity, while Mercedes quotes usable capacity, so those two battery numbers are not directly comparable. Manufacturer cargo measurements can also use different methodologies.

Price and Availability

BMW has already given U.S. buyers a clear starting point.

The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500, plus $1,350 for destination and handling. That makes the effective starting figure $62,850 before taxes, registration and optional equipment.

BMW has also opened its U.S. configurator and says deliveries are scheduled to begin in late September 2026.

Options can raise the price considerably. BMW has announced packages covering driver assistance, comfort, M Sport styling, premium audio, larger wheels, leather and other upgrades.

Mercedes-Benz is harder to evaluate on value because its U.S. website currently lists the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric as “Price Coming Soon.”

That does not automatically make BMW the better value. It simply means BMW is the only one of the two that buyers can properly price today.

Range: BMW Has the Clearer U.S. Story

This is where the iX3 currently makes one of its strongest arguments.

BMW lists a 383-to-434-mile estimated range, depending on the wheel and tire package. The headline 434-mile figure comes with the no-cost 20-inch summer-tire configuration, while the standard 20-inch all-season tires are listed at 383 miles.

Other available wheel and tire combinations sit between those figures.

That detail matters.

Seeing “434-mile BMW iX3” in a headline does not mean every iX3 configuration carries the same rating. Buyers choosing wheels for appearance or all-season usability should check the range attached to their exact configuration.

Mercedes-Benz has not yet published a U.S. EPA estimate for the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric.

In Europe, Mercedes currently quotes a preliminary range of up to 713 km under the WLTP test cycle.

It would be misleading to simply convert 713 kilometers into miles and place that number beside BMW’s U.S. estimate. EPA and WLTP testing are different systems and often produce different results.

So for an American buyer today, BMW has the advantage simply because its U.S. range picture is much more complete.

Battery Technology

Both vehicles use new-generation electric architectures, but they approach the battery story slightly differently.

The BMW iX3 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology with cylindrical lithium-ion cells and an 800-volt electrical system. BMW lists 112.3 kWh of total battery capacity.

Mercedes also uses an 800-volt architecture. The GLC 400 4MATIC Electric has a 94-kWh usable lithium-ion battery, according to Mercedes-Benz technical information. Its cells use an anode chemistry that mixes silicon oxide with graphite, and Mercedes says the pack was also designed with serviceability and repair in mind.

Again, 112.3 kWh versus 94 kWh does not mean the BMW simply has “18.3 kWh more usable battery.” One manufacturer is quoting total capacity and the other usable capacity.

Fast Charging: BMW Leads on Peak Power

For anyone planning regular highway trips, this could be one of the most important parts of the comparison.

The BMW iX3 can accept up to 400 kW of DC fast-charging power at a suitable 800-volt charger. BMW quotes approximately 21 minutes from 10% to 80%, and says an ideal 10-minute charging session can add as much as 185 miles of estimated range.

Mercedes peaks at 330 kW on a suitable 800-volt charger and quotes approximately 22 minutes from 10% to 80%. At compatible 400-volt stations, Mercedes says the vehicle can charge at up to 100 kW.

The interesting part is that BMW’s headline peak is substantially higher, but the manufacturer-quoted 10-to-80% times differ by only around a minute.

That is a good reminder that peak charging speed is not the whole story. Charging curves, battery temperature, state of charge and the charger itself all influence how long a real charging stop takes.

On paper, though, BMW holds the charging advantage.

Home Charging and NACS Compatibility

The iX3 also has a stronger maximum AC charging specification.

BMW lists support for up to 15.4 kW AC charging, while Mercedes currently lists 9.6 kW for the GLC Electric. Mercedes estimates approximately 12.5 hours for a full 0-to-100% AC charge under its specified conditions. BMW’s current technical data lists roughly 10 hours and 15 minutes for 0-to-100% AC charging under its stated setup.

Both vehicles are well prepared for the changing North American charging landscape.

BMW uses a NACS DC fast-charging port and says a CCS fast-charging adapter is included.

Mercedes also lists NACS for DC fast charging, while AC charging uses J1772. Mercedes notes that an adapter may be needed for CCS1 DC chargers.

For many buyers, that connector compatibility may prove almost as important as the headline charging number.

Power and Acceleration: Mercedes Is Quicker

Mercedes turns the tables when performance enters the conversation.

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive produces 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, with a manufacturer-estimated 0-to-60-mph time of 4.7 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric produces 483 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque and is listed at 4.2 seconds from 0 to 60 mph.

Half a second is noticeable on paper, but what stands out even more is the torque difference.

The Mercedes has 114 lb-ft more torque, which helps explain its stronger acceleration and towing figures.

For outright straight-line performance, the GLC Electric wins this round.

Driving Technology: Different Priorities

Because DriveNyra has not personally road-tested these two vehicles, I am not going to tell you that one has “better steering feel” or a “more comfortable ride” as though that judgment came from behind the wheel.

What we can compare is the engineering underneath them.

BMW introduces its new Heart of Joy control architecture in the iX3. It combines drivetrain, braking, recuperation and driving-dynamics control into a central system designed to react extremely quickly. BMW positions it as a major part of the Neue Klasse driving experience.

Mercedes takes a different route. Its available Agility Package combines AIRMATIC air suspension with rear-axle steering, intended to improve both low-speed maneuverability and higher-speed stability.

That gives the two SUVs different personalities on paper.

BMW is emphasizing integrated vehicle control and driver response. Mercedes is leaning harder into comfort, maneuverability and sophisticated chassis hardware.

A proper winner here should wait until comparable road testing is available.

Size, Cabin Space and Family Use

The Mercedes is slightly larger.

The BMW measures 188.3 inches long with a 114.1-inch wheelbase.

The GLC Electric stretches to 190.8 inches, while its wheelbase measures 117.0 inches.

That gives the Mercedes roughly 2.5 additional inches of overall length and almost three extra inches between the axles.

A longer wheelbase does not automatically guarantee a better rear seat, but it gives designers more room to work with when packaging passengers.

For families regularly carrying teenagers or adults in the back, the Mercedes deserves a particularly close look once full U.S. rear-seat measurements are published.

Cargo Space and Frunk

On manufacturer-published figures, BMW lists 30.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 65 cubic feet with them folded, plus a 2.0-cu-ft front storage compartment.

Mercedes lists a 4.5-cu-ft front trunk, 20.1 cubic feet of rear cargo space, and up to 61.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Mercedes clearly has the larger frunk.

I would be more cautious about declaring BMW the rear-cargo winner purely from those published cubic-foot numbers, because automakers can use different measurement conventions.

For an ownership-focused comparison, a standardized luggage test would ultimately tell us more than two numbers taken from separate manufacturer specification sheets.

Towing: A Clear Mercedes Advantage

If towing is part of your EV plans, the difference is meaningful.

BMW rates the iX3 for up to 4,400 pounds when properly equipped.

Mercedes-Benz USA lists the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric at up to 5,291 pounds.

That gives the Mercedes nearly 900 pounds of additional rated towing capacity.

For buyers pulling a larger trailer, recreational equipment or similar loads, this is one of the GLC Electric’s clearest advantages.

Interior and Technology: Minimalist BMW or Digital-Luxury Mercedes?

This may ultimately be the most personal part of the decision.

BMW completely rethinks its cabin interface with Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X. Instead of relying only on a conventional instrument cluster, Panoramic Vision places key information across the lower portion of the windshield, closer to the driver’s natural line of sight.

There is still a central touchscreen, along with an optional 3D head-up display, but the overall philosophy is strongly driver-focused.

Mercedes goes in a more theatrical direction.

The GLC Electric uses the latest generation of MBUX built around Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). Standard digital displays can be expanded with an additional passenger display or the available cross-cabin MBUX Hyperscreen.

This is less about one system being objectively better and more about what kind of cabin you enjoy.

If you prefer a cleaner, driver-centered interface, the BMW approach may make more sense.

If you want the dashboard itself to feel like a major part of the luxury experience, Mercedes is likely to have the stronger emotional pull.

Driver Assistance and Safety

Both vehicles bring substantial driver-assistance technology.

BMW equips the iX3 with features including Driving Assistant Plus, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Keeping Assistant, Forward Collision Mitigation and Active Cruise Control with Steering Assistant. More advanced assistance is available through optional packages.

Mercedes lists features including adaptive cruise assistance through DISTRONIC, lane-keeping functions and automated parking assistance, with additional functionality delivered through its MB.DRIVE and Digital Extras ecosystem.

What I would not do at this stage is declare one vehicle “safer.”

These are new-generation 2027 models, and comparable U.S. crash-test results for both vehicles are not yet available to support a responsible winner.

Until they are, the safest conclusion is simply that both offer modern driver-assistance systems, but crashworthiness should be revisited when independent U.S. testing is published.

Warranty and Long-Term Ownership

BMW is currently more transparent about its high-voltage battery coverage.

BMW states that the iX3’s high-voltage lithium-ion battery is covered against defects for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Mercedes-Benz has published 2027 warranty material for its electric range, but current publicly available information does not yet give me enough confidence to assign a GLC Electric-specific high-voltage battery term without qualification.

Rather than assume that coverage from another Mercedes EV automatically applies to the GLC, DriveNyra will update this section when final U.S. GLC Electric warranty documentation is available.

That may sound overly careful, but with an expensive EV battery, warranty details are exactly where assumptions should be avoided.

Which One Looks Better for Long-Distance Driving?

Right now, BMW has the stronger argument.

We have a published U.S. range of up to 434 miles in the most range-efficient configuration, a 400-kW charging ceiling and a roughly 21-minute manufacturer estimate for 10-to-80% charging.

Mercedes is only about a minute behind on its quoted charging stop and may ultimately prove extremely competitive on range, but its U.S. EPA number is still missing.

Until that figure arrives, BMW is easier to recommend for an American buyer making long-distance range a priority.

Which One Is Better for a Family?

This comparison is closer.

BMW publishes strong cargo figures and offers substantial range, which can reduce charging anxiety on longer family trips.

Mercedes gives you the longer wheelbase, the larger front trunk, stronger towing capacity and a cabin that places more emphasis on comfort and digital luxury.

If your family regularly tows recreational equipment or you value passenger-oriented luxury, I would look closely at the Mercedes.

If maximum range and charging performance matter more, BMW currently has the stronger hand.

Which One Offers Better Value?

We cannot answer this fairly yet.

BMW starts at $61,500 plus destination.

Mercedes-Benz has not announced U.S. pricing.

If the GLC Electric arrives significantly above the BMW, the iX3 could become a very strong value proposition in the premium-EV segment.

If Mercedes prices it closely, then its additional power, towing capability and luxury features could make the decision much harder.

Until then, anyone confidently declaring a value winner is working with an incomplete equation.

BMW iX3: Where It Looks Strongest

The iX3’s strongest case comes from the combination of range, charging speed, known pricing and new-generation BMW technology.

Its 400-kW peak charging capability is particularly notable, and the 383-to-434-mile U.S. range spread gives buyers several configurations that could still provide substantial highway usability.

BMW also appears to be taking a more driver-centered approach to its digital transformation rather than simply adding larger screens.

Its main disadvantages against the Mercedes are lower performance figures, less towing capacity and a smaller front trunk.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric: Where It Looks Strongest

The GLC Electric has a different set of strengths.

It is quicker, much stronger in torque, rated to tow more and offers a longer wheelbase. The availability of AIRMATIC suspension, rear-axle steering and the expansive MBUX digital environment also gives it a distinctly luxury-focused character.

Its biggest weakness in this comparison is not necessarily the vehicle itself.

It is the information that is still missing.

Without U.S. pricing and EPA range, two of the biggest questions an EV buyer asks remain unanswered.

Author’s Take

If I had to choose between them based purely on what we can verify today, I would put the BMW iX3 slightly ahead overall.

Not because the Mercedes looks weak — it doesn't.

The GLC Electric is faster, produces substantially more torque, tows more and may appeal more strongly to someone who wants a luxury SUV to feel luxurious first and technological second.

But BMW has already answered more of the practical ownership questions.

We know the price. We have U.S. range figures across multiple wheel and tire configurations. We know it can charge at up to 400 kW. And the combination of those factors makes the iX3 particularly interesting for someone moving into an EV without wanting long-distance travel to feel like a compromise.

I also like BMW's approach to the cabin on paper. Panoramic Vision feels less like a competition to install the largest possible screen and more like an attempt to rethink where useful information should actually appear.

That said, my choice comes with an asterisk.

Mercedes still has two very important cards to reveal: its U.S. EPA range and its price.

If the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric arrives with competitive range and pricing close to the iX3, this could become a much harder decision.

For now, though, my pick would be the BMW.
